It was decided to hold the competition in Pakistan. The Indian cricket squad, however, was hesitant to travel to Pakistan to compete in the competition. After much consideration, it was decided that India would compete in a hybrid format in which they would play most of their matches abroad and a select few in Pakistan. As a result, it will be the first Asia Cup to be jointly hosted by two nations, with Sri Lanka hosting the final nine games and Pakistan hosting the first four.[21] Nepal, who qualified for the ACC Asia Cup for the first time in the 2023 season, will join the five other full members of the Asian Cricket Council.

The Asia Cup is a one-day (50 overs) and twenty-over (20 overs) international cricket competition for men. When the Asian Cricket Council was launched in 1983 as a way to foster goodwill among Asian nations, it was established at the same time.

Originally, it was planned to happen every two years. The Asia Cup is the sole cricket continental championship, and the victorious team is crowned Asia's champion. Every two years, the ODI and T20I formats are switched.

The council's offices were located in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, where the first Asia Cup was contested in 1984 (up till 1995). India stayed away from the competition in 1986 because of its tense cricketing relations with Sri Lanka.

Due to tense political ties with India, Pakistan boycotted the 1990–1991 tournament, and the 1993 tournament was called off for the same reason. The ACC declared that beginning in 2009, the tournament would take place every two years.[3] All of the Asia Cup matches have been declared official ODIs by the ICC.

The Asian Cricket Council was reduced in size in 2015, and the International Cricket Council (ICC) declared that, starting in 2016, Asia Cup matches would alternate between One Day International and Twenty20 International formats in accordance with the format of upcoming international competitions.[

India is the most successful team in the competition with seven titles (six ODI and one T20I). With six victories, Sri Lanka is the second-most successful team, behind Pakistan's two championships. Sri Lanka has participated in the most Asia Cups (15), followed by Bangladesh with 14, India with 13, and Pakistan with 12.

The inaugural game featured Sri Lanka, a brand-new ICC member, against Pakistan. India won the tournament with two victories, Sri Lanka finished in second place with one victory over Pakistan, and Pakistan was eliminated after losing both of its games.

The second edition was held in Sri Lanka in 1986. After a contentious series in Sri Lanka the year before, India withdrew due to strained cricketing ties with Sri Lanka.[10] Bangladesh was firstly incorporated. Pakistan was defeated by Sri Lanka in the tournament's finale.

The third edition, which took place in 1988, marked Bangladesh's first international cricket competition. India won their second Asia Cup in the championship match by defeating Sri Lanka by six wickets.

After 11 years, Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, hosted the fifth edition of the series in 1995. All three teams had similar points after the preliminary round, however India and Sri Lanka advanced to the championship game due to a greater run rate than Pakistan. India defeated Sri Lanka in the championship match for the third time in a row.

2000-2010

in 2000, Bangladesh hosted the 7th edition for the second time. While India only defeated Bangladesh once and, surprise, did not make it to the final for the first time, Pakistan and Sri Lanka did. Pakistan won the Asia Cup for the first time in the final with a win over Sri Lanka. Yousuf Youhana won the title of Tournament Player.

The eighth edition took place in 2004 in Sri Lanka. The tournament's structure changed as a result of the addition of UAE and Hong Kong for the first time, and it was now separated into three phases: the Group Stage, Super Fours, and the Final.

Two groups of three teams each played the other once during the group stage. Top two teams from each group advanced to the Super Four stage, where they faced off against one another twice. The top two teams from the Super Four round then advanced to the championship game.

Group A was assigned to the hosts Sri Lanka, India, and the United Arab Emirates, while Group B was given to the reigning champions Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong. The group stage saw the elimination of the UAE and Hong Kong. Bangladesh held the distinction of being the first team to go to the second round of a major competition, however they performed poorly in the Super Fours and were eliminated.

India and Sri Lanka won the Super Four round and advanced to the championship. Sri Lanka defeated India in the Asia Cup final by a score of 25 runs to win. The winner of the tournament was Sanath Jayasuriya.
